Has its faults, but this is a captivating book. Recommended) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (Good Read) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (As Is) ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This was the first book I read in a long time that I didn't put down half way through. I enjoyed every single moment I was reading it. Its a bit complicated at first especially for me because I have never read a book dealing with time travel so it was hard to wrap my mind around the concept of how things can happen in the future yet the present and in the future the past hasn't happened yet etc. It bugged me a little at first because I felt some things were inconsistent, but the more I read it, the more it all came together and it made sense. The trick to enjoying this book is putting aside the technical aspects of time travel and focusing on the human relationships and the story of these two people. My heart still beats fast when I think about this book. You end up falling in love with the main couple just as they do with one another. This is the best love story I have ever read...better than the classics. Henry has an unusual condition: when under stress, and sometimes for no reason at all, he time travels, leaving him stranded naked and alone somewhere in the past or future until he returns to his present time. When Clare and Henry meet, she is a child and he is in his forties; when they meet again, 20-year-old Clare has known Henry her whole life but 28-year-old Henry has never seen Clare before. The Time Traveler's Wife chronicles, from both points of view, the circular journey that bring the lovers together through time. The premise of the novel is unparalleled, and Niffenegger presents it with care and realism, and so this is a truly unique book. The novel runs too long for its romantic content and the ending is abrupt, but on the whole this is an ingenious book that turns romance on its head and raises questions about the inevitability of love. The premise of The Time Traveler's Wife is ingeniously simple and makes a summary rather hard to write. Henry time travels; Henry and Clare and in love. Henry's travels take his future into Clare's past so that when they meet in the present, they are destined to be together. Of course this idea denies any sort of science, and for the most part Niffenegger avoids a pseudo-scientific explanation. But while the concept goes against common sense, it does not require a suspension of disbelief: Niffenegger is so dedicated to the reality of her story that the concept's impossibility is irrelevant. Henry's travels are realistically difficult and dangerous, the narration frequently switches between time periods to bring both the periods and Henry's constant changes between them to life, and the plot turns back on itself to form an intricate spiral or past, present, and future that brings together major plot points as well as the smallest details. As a result, the novel's premise comes to life. It defines the book and sweeps away the reader until it seems entirely real. It takes a very simple story about a couple and their love and turns it into a very complex story about their love as created by and challenged by Henry's journeys through time. The book is worthy of recommendation on this point alone: it is rare to see a novel with such a unique premise, and rarer still to see one that fulfills the potential of its premise. Outside of the brilliant time travel, however, The Time Traveler's Wife isn't much better than average. The writing style is apt, but not exceptional. Although Niffenegger avoids much of it, the dual narration and multiple timelines leads to some repetition, and the repeated sections slow the book down and feel like filler text. They are not the only time that the book feels slow or padded: the novel runs over 500 pages, a fair bit longer than the average book and a bit too long for this love story. Time traveling turns romance on its head, but even upside down the romance remains a romance, and there's only so much that can be done with it. Without any secondary aspects (like science fiction) or further complications, the love story is spread thin over the 500 pages. Conversely, the conclusion comes too quickly in a series of swift events that make only a clumsy attempt to do what the rest of the story does so well: loop, inescapably but always meaningfully, back up themselves. The conclusion seemed immature compared to the rest of the book, and makes for a disappointing end to the story. None of these flaws are major, and they're certainly not enough to detract from the brilliant premise of the book, but they do knock the novel down to "above average" rather than "excellent." Even an above average novel can deserve a hearty recommendation, and this one does. The concept of a time-warped romance is ingenious, and Niffenegger fulfills the premise and brings it to life in a captivating novel. The circuitous plot holds the reader's attention to the end, and all in all the novel is intriguing and quite readable. The reader that looks deeper into the text will also discover some interesting questions: where does Clare and Henry's romance begin? is it inevitable? how can fate and free will coexist? The Time Traveler's Wife has its flaws, but on the whole it is readable and intriguing, and quite unlike anything I've read before. I'm glad that I picked this book up, and I recommend it to all readers--don't be put off by the would-be-sci-fi aspects or by the romance, because neither are as they appear, and trust that the plot is more logical and more magical than I make it sound here. With such a unique concept, made so realistic by the author, this is a romance unlike any other. The book has it's flaws but I thought it was interesting. It held my attention and took me away. I think my strongest critique would be that the reader does not get a glimpse into Clare's life without Henry. This seemed like an oversight to me. And Henry having sex with Henry was weird. Otherwise I really enjoyed it. I have always read and now sometimes listen to fiction books, with the thought of "As is". What I mean by this is simple. I believe the author wrote this to project a certain vision to the reader. I don't ever criticize authors for "not writing this, or leaving something out". People who criticize fiction books for something they think were left out, are being anal, and should remember, it is fiction! Had this been a documentary account of a true story and something been omitted, well that is entirely different. My comments on the book? I liked it. Enjoyed it, and it was a great escape. Would recommend as a good read to people who remotely like fiction/science fiction. A dazzling novel in the most untraditional fashion, this is the remarkable story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap, and it is Audrey Niffenegger's cinematic storytelling that makes the novel's unconventional chronology so vibrantly triumphant. An enchanting debut and a spellbinding tale of fate and belief in the bonds of love, The Time Traveler's Wife is destined to captivate readers for years to come. All the books you can put in a bag for just two dollars! (And you could get as many bags as you want!) I started to read it, finding the time-travel aspect interesting. At first it sets up well, giving a good context of the present day for the character and how that contrasts with the past that she winds up in. Then it gets boring and it never stops. Once the reader gets to the castle the main character ends up going to, they soon realize that Diana Gabaldon apparently decided that she needed to put in everything she knew about Scotland at that point in history with all of its customs, manner of dress, dialect, mannerisms, manners, celebrations, and basically any other aspect of life a person could imagine. This is commonly and appropriately referred to as an "information dump." This is exactly how NOT to write. The goal of a story is to create an experience that will connect the reader to the protagonist emotionally, not to bog down the narrative with paragraph after paragraph of details that have no actual bearing on the story. Now, certainly some details must be weaved into the story to give the reader a context in which to understand the events that are unfolding, just as a pinch of seasoning or spice may help bring the flavors out in a dish. However, Gabaldon decided to unscrew the lid and just dump the whole can in. Anyone who needs sage advice on how to bore a reader need look no further nor take notes on any other work than this. I won't write a long review of the book, since there are so many thorough reviews already posted. I went into the book with a little hesitation, because I don't enjoy romance novels. I was happily surprised that this story had so much more to offer. I'd classify it more as an epic story than a romance novel. I'm excited that I discovered the series late in the game, and there are already six books published. Now I don't have to wait for sequels to come out -- I can answer my new obsession immediately. I enjoyed the book quite a lot, and would definitely recommend it. Length not withstanding, OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon will keep you reading and rereading late into the night. The first of an outstanding historical time travel epic, it has a little something for everyone. The story unfolds as Claire Randall slips through the veil into 18th century Scotland and the days before the Scottish defeat by the Duke of Cumberland. Her characters are so vivid they walk off the pages and into your heart. Nash Black, author of WRITING AS A SMALL BUSINESS and SINS OF THE FATHERS. I so totally enjoyed this book! You need to work to get thru the first 50 pages but when you have you will be rewarded. Ms. Gabaldon spins a wonderful story, full of romance, action, history, and fantasy. Loved it! I walked into Borders and asked for a great series. These were recomended to me and I am in love with them. There is so much information and so much love between these two people that it makes you feel like that love like that is timeless. InOutlander, a 600-page time-travel romance, strong-willed and sensual Claire Randall leads a double life with a husband in one century, and a lover in another. Torn between fidelity and desire, she struggles to understand the pure intent of her heart. But don't let the number of pages and the Scottish dialect scare you. It's one of the fastest reads you'll have in your library. While on her second honeymoon in the British Isles, Claire touches a boulder that hurls her back in time to the forbidden Castle Leoch with the MacKenzie clan. Not understanding the forces that brought her there, she becomes ensnared in life-threatening situations with a Scots warrior named James Fraser. But it isn't all spies and drudgery that she must endure. For amid her new surroundings and the terrors she faces, she is lured into love and passion like she's never known before. Gabaldon creates characters that you'll remember, laugh with, cry with, and cheer for long after you've finished the book.--Candy Paape Unrivaled storytelling ... unforgettable characters ... rich historical detail ... these are the hallmarks of Diana Gabaldon's work. HerNew York Timesbestselling Outlander novels have earned the praise of critics and captured millions of readers. Here is the story that started it all, introducing two remarkable characters, Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser, in a spellbinding novel of passion and history that combines exhilarating adventure with a love story for the ages.... The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon— when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient stone circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach— an "outlander"— in a Scotland torn by war and raiding Highland clans in the year of Our Lord ... 1743. Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into intrigues and dangers that may threaten her life ... and shatter her heart. For here she meets James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, and becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire ... and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives. Diana Gabaldon holds a master's degree in marine biology and a Ph.D. in ecology, and spent a dozen years as a university professor before turning to write fiction full-time. Their efforts are laudable, but futile. Along the way with DRAGONFLY IN AMBER, Diana Gabaldon develops her vivid characters, carries two complete story lines and leads us up to the parting of the lovers as if we didn't know it beforehand. The two stories flow seamlessly together: Claire's return to Scotland in 1968 and her relationship to her daughter who has been kept ignorant of the true circumstances of her birth, and the developing relationship between Claire and Jamie in another time and place. OUTLANDER, the first in the epic will hook you, DRAGONFLY IN AMBER will insure you keep reading. Nash Black, author of WRITING AS A SMALL BUSINESS and SINS OF THE FATHERS. I bought this for my wife. This is her third time through the series. She decided that it is easier to buy them than to continue to check them out at the local library, as she intends to read the series several more times. It must be really good. I normally don't wait a decade to discover excellent works of fictional, but historical literature, however that's what happened. If you're like me, better late than sorry my Grandsire used to say, ya ken? I just thought I would leave a few words letting folks know that I really loved this book as much as Outlander. I admire Diana's style of writing as well as the historical nature that she presents so vividly. I have never really considered "romance" novels something that I would appreciate as a guy, but have found her work simply put, hard to put down. If you like historical novels, you should like these books as well. And it's not just history that she touches on here. Don't let the cover fool you. All the bases are covered and the antagonists and protagonists abound; There is blood, guts, sex, more sex, love, lust, murder, darkness, religion, strife, treachery, deceit, betrayal, sacrifice, war, death, sickness, and hope.. all beautifully written. As with any historical novel, one should come away with a bit more understanding of what and how life was like in the period and I was not disappointed in the very least. Thank you Diana Gabaldon! I wound up buying the complete series based upon Amazon reviews I initially found after reading POTE and WWE by Ken Follett. I would highly recommend these two books as well as the first two works in the Outlander series. Having only finished "Dragonfly in Amber", the second work, lucky me, I still have 4 more to go! And if these two works are any inclination of what's to come, then I will most assuredly will remain content into the wee hours of morning for weeks to come.. Diana Gabaldon continues to keep me enthralled in her book. I found it very emotional, hysterically funny. She lets you know her characters..feel their emotions and feel their pain. I began the third of the series and these are books I will surely read again. Outlander is a series of 6 books, quite large in volume. When I first read Outlander, I loved this story, and I loved the characters. But by the time I finished this book I wasn't sure I wanted to read the next one and find out what happened to Jamie and Claire. But as I said, I was now engrossed with the people and the story and so I continued. I am now half way through the 4th novel (Drums of Autumn) and already own the last two (pre-purchased A Breath of Snow and Ashes). And I STILL wonder WHY I am continueing to read these! And here is why, Diana Gabaldon writes in DETAIL right down to the dirt on someones shoes. And she says so and so got chills and not because the room was cold; so many times you want to wretch. She writes pages and pages and pages of things that have nothing to do with the story. You really begin to wonder where she is headed and you start to feel that she is either wasting your time or she just likes the sound of her own voice. OR she enjoys BEING this character right down to the last thought and shiver. I find myself speed reading through some passages looking for when we are going to get back on track. Don't get me wrong, she is BRILLIANT!! If you love historical fiction, you WILL love her writing and you will LEARN alot about living in the time she writes about as well as the Scots. She does her homework, her research is impeccable and she has a cult following with this series. It is a great story and I will read all of them, I just think she could have written the SAME story in half the time. So forewarned is forearmed with Diana Gabaldon. If you have tons of time to kill, this is your book! With her now-classic novelOutlander, Diana Gabaldon introduced two unforgettable characters— Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser—delighting readers with a story of adventure and love that spanned two centuries. Now Gabaldon returns to that extraordinary time and place in this vivid, powerful follow-up toOutlander.... For twenty years Claire Randall has kept her secrets. But now she is returning with her grown daughter to Scotland’s majestic mist-shrouded hills. Here Claire plans to reveal a truth as stunning as the events that gave it birth: about the mystery of an ancient circle of standing stones ... about a love that transcends the boundaries of time ... and about James Fraser, a Scottish warrior whose gallantry once drew a young Claire from the security of her century to the dangers of his.... Now a legacy of blood and desire will test her beautiful copper-haired daughter, Brianna, as Claire’s spellbinding journey of self-discovery continues in the intrigue-ridden Paris court of Charles Stuart ... in a race to thwart a doomed Highlands uprising ... and in a desperate fight to save both the child and the man she loves.... There are a few unaswered questions that I have, such as: after the fire DIDN'T happen, why did they not investigate further? And if I were a time traveler to Colonial America, I would at least TRY to meet some of the people involved in the birth of a nation, especially if I were a historian, as Roger is. And how many times can Jamie get beat up before he finally comes apart at the seams? But anyway, the medical stuff is right on, and fascinating info. That Jocasta - what a big fat liar!!!!!! This book does not disappoint. It is long, but I savored every page. The descriptions of rural early America make you feel like you are there, and the characters remain true to themselves. The adventures seemed realistic, which I've found may not be exactly the case of a couple previous adventures that Jamie and Claire have had in previous books (always exciting- perhaps not totally realistic). Reading this book only made me desperate for the final one or two that are to come. This book like all of Diana Gabaldon's was engrossing. It was SO hard to put down&took me right back into Jamey's&Clare's world. The book arrived quickly&in perfect shape. A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHES give us our characters back as we expect them to be, larger than life beckoning us on to number seven with impatient expectations. Okay, this one more than lives up to Diana Gabaldon's standard of long books with very fine print. But you hang on, even with a magnifying glass through every word. Diana is one of the few authors whose descriptions match the little essays of Victor Hugo, who was paid by the inch. You read them, even if they don't advance the storyline. That is the remarkable talent that keeps us waiting for the next installment. Nash Black, author of WRITING AS A SMALL BUSINESS and SINS OF THE FATHERS. A BREATH OF SNOW AND ASHESDiana Gabaldon has created another masterpiece in this series. I hope there are more volumes in the offing! Eagerly anticipated by her legions of fans, this sixth novel in Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling Outlander saga is a masterpiece of historical fiction from one of the most popular authors of our time. Since the initial publication ofOutlanderfifteen years ago, Diana Gabaldon’sNew York Timesbestselling saga has won the hearts of readers the world over— and sold more than twelve million books. Now,A Breath of Snow and Ashescontinues the extraordinary story of 18th-century Scotsman Jamie Fraser and his 20th-century wife, Claire. The year is 1772, and on the eve of the American Revolution, the long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, isolated cabins burn in the forest. With chaos brewing, the governor calls upon Jamie Fraser to unite the backcountry and safeguard the colony for King and Crown. But from his wife Jamie knows that three years hence the shot heard round the world will be fired, and the result will be independence— with those loyal to the King either dead or in exile. And there is also the matter of a tiny clipping fromThe Wilmington Gazette, dated 1776, which reports Jamie’s death, along with his kin. For once, he hopes, his time-traveling family may be wrong about the future. From the Hardcover edition. I actually didn't find the book boring like some reviewers have, I just found it repetitious. Where the arrival of some characters from the earlier books are welcome and fun (Lord John for example) there is a recycled element to the book that left me wanting less of Brianna and her betrothed Roger, and more of Jamie and Claire. Once again she employs a pretty generic and stock villain who left me wondering is somebody always going to be raped in these stories? And while the first three books had some pretty terrific climaxes, this kind of peters out with a whimper. Still, the fact that this woman can clock a book in a over a thousand pages and still make it hard to put down, any quibbles feel pretty minor. Jamie and Claire establish a settlement deep in the North Carolina mountains far from the winds of change which has racked their lives. But the DRUMS OF AUTUMN concerns their daughter Brianna and the man who loves her enough to travel through time, Roger. Neither of the second generation are strong enough to compete with the power of Jamie and Claire Fraizer. Time outs stop a story in its tracks and this installment in the series is no exception. If the reader is familiar with the story and has read the previous books then it is an acceptable read. But as a stand alone the title does not have enough substance to sustain it. I was quite surprised upon seeing it that it was not a part of the highlander saga, directly, that I so love to read. Magic most definitely resides in the Maine summerhouse where the mysterious Madame Zoya has granted the innermost wishes of its visitors. Now, three women have come to this special place with one thing in common: a painful past they would each like to rewrite. Amy, who hides a heartbreaking loss behind her seemingly perfect marriage and family...Faith, a widow in her thirties whose deepest grief is for a man from years ago...and Zoë, an artist shunned by her hometown for reasons she doesn't know, after a traumatic night erased her memory. With their mystical powers, Madame Zoya and her sister Primrose are about to transport the trio to eighteenth-century England to alter Amy's ancestry. But although surprises await each of them, will stepping back in time bring the women the happy endings they seek?
